Hydration and Performance: More Than Just Water

Dehydration impacts everything from energy to appetite. Here's how much you actually need and when electrolytes matter.

Even mild dehydration (1–2% body weight loss) can impair cognitive function, mood, and exercise performance.

How Much Do You Need?

A good starting point is half your body weight in ounces. Adjust up for exercise, heat, and altitude.

Signs of Dehydration

  • Dark urine
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue that coffee doesn't fix
  • Increased hunger (thirst often mimics hunger)

When Electrolytes Matter

During extended fasts, intense exercise, or hot weather, plain water may not be enough. Add sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
